Causes of IVF Failure
Implantation failure of the embryo
This is when the embryo can’t implant itself in the uterus. No particular reason for this has been found as of now. It can be due to issues with the embryo or the uterus. In general, if the embryo is unhealthy, it does not last for more than 4 days. Sometimes, mothers undergo PGS testing before implantation to ensure the embryo is healthy.
Age of the woman:
Any woman of fertile age releases an egg from the ovary every month. This egg fuses with the male sperm and forms a zygote. The release of eggs starts decreasing after women reach their 30s. This decrease comes with a decrease in the release of the FSH hormone, which is responsible for reproduction in both males and females. When the process of IVF starts, the female is given medication to increase egg production. When the woman is already in the egg decline phase, these medications don’t turn out to be effective. Thus, fewer fusions happen. If more embryos can be implanted, the chances of a successful IVF treatment increase.
Genetic Causes:
Chromosomal, or genetic, abnormalities are the most prominent cause of IVF failure. When a woman has crossed her mid-thirties or is going for the IVF procedure in her 40s, the chances of the embryo having chromosomal abnormalities increase. However, according to some research, it is the sperm that carries most of the chromosomal abnormalities. The abnormalities greatly reduce the rate of success of the IVF procedure.
Embryo Selection:
Embryo selection is the process in IVF where the best embryos are chosen for implantation. Sometimes, it happens that the wrong embryo gets chosen for the implantation process, thus leading to a failure in the IVF process. The defective embryo can survive for a maximum of 7 days, leading to a miscarriage.
