Male Fertility

What is IVF ?

In-vitro Fertilization is an Assisted Reproductive Technology which is used to help couples facing infertility issues. In this procedure, the ovum and sperm are retrieved from the female and male partner respectively, prepared by the embryologist and then made to fertilise under laboratory conditions to form an embryo. This embryo is then transferred to the uterus of the female partner for implantation and further development.

Who is a candidate for IVF ?

There are several factors for which couples may be recommended for IVF such as:

  • Low sperm count or motility
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovulation disorders
  • Cervical mucus related problems
  • Blockage or structural anomalies with the fallopian tube
  • Unexplained infertility

How long should one wait before consulting an IVF specialist ?

A couple should consult a specialist if they are unable to conceive after 1 year of unprotected intercourse. A specialist will evaluate and suggest fertility treatments suitable for the couple. If the partners face a severe fertility problem or are not responding to treatment, they may be suggested to opt for an IVF.

How successful is an IVF procedure ?

The success of an IVF procedure is dependent upon a number of factors such as

  • Age of the female partner
  • Duration of infertility
  • Type of infertility
  • Cause of infertility
  • Quality of the sperm, ova (eggs), and embryo
  • Development of the endometrium

The success rate of IVF is around 30-35% and increases with the decrease in age lower than 35 years.

How long does an IVF procedure take?

IVF procedures may take up to 4-6 weeks prior to ovum retrieval from the female partner. The embryo is then transferred after 48 hours for implantation. Many coupes may need to undergo several cycles before being able to achieve a pregnancy.
