Counseling Beyond Treatment (Story of Sakshi)

Often it is seen that couples with infertility cases aren't well counseled & guided enough by doctors to make them aware of what they are getting into. This may result in confusion, misunderstandings, and disappointment later on. The same happened with Sakshi and her husband Brijesh.

2 years after the marriage and unsuccessful conceiving, they seek a fertility expert. The doctor counsels them about whether they need to undergo IVF; alternatives, if any; and the cost of the procedure. So, she underwent her first IVF cycle in a hope that she'll be a mother soon. Sakshi says she was emotionally stable initially, though it was stressful. It was getting difficult for her to maintain a balance with her hectic job. She put her mind and body through so much. Six weeks into the pregnancy, however, she lost the fetus to a miscarriage, leaving her feeling devastated.

The couple was unprepared for this crushing disappointment. For Sakshi, the toll on her mental health was far worse than she anticipated, and she ended up going to therapy. She wondered if she had done something to cause the miscarriage. After a while, they went through a second because they were told that they should go through at least three cycles to have the best chance of success. However, wary of being financially exploited by hospitals, she and Brijesh had decided to do it only once. One more failed IVF cycle later, the couple took a break and then decided to consult a renowned specialist instead. That’s where they achieved a breakthrough.

Many couples have reported being not counseled about what to expect beyond the technical details of medicines, symptoms, and the outcome. We believe it should be mandated to counsel the couples properly before and throughout who are seeking infertility treatment.
